2006 NSYSA INDOOR SITE SETUP

Anyone who wants to volunteer to help me sort stuff at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon is welcome!

ORANGE 1 & ORANGE 2 are the two teams at each site doing setup of concession and goals. Please talk to each other sooner rather than later. If you can't make contact with the number on the ALIGNMENT SHEET, I can usually supply a second or a third person for you to try. Some sites have two surfaces with BLUE 1 & BLUE 2 as well but there is still only one concession at all sites. Double facilities basically get double the stuff with a few minor exceptions.

On Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the public Recreation sites are staffed but at the schools the custodians are being paid specifically from 6:00 p.m. onwards to be there for you.

You should come to the pickup point early if you want to be at the site doors by 6:00 p.m. This is the best approach. The stuff is ready by 5:00 p.m. for pickup.

Concession supplies and goals are at the same pickup point. Park Royal South behind "EXTRA FOODS" is used because there are covered areas for cars in case of inclement weather adjacent to open parking areas for big trucks so the stuff can be unloaded and sorted per site.

I've usually never seen the pickup done with less than 2 minivan type vehicles and 4 people per site. Roof racks and rope are great for the crossbars of the goals but they have fit inside a lot of different vehicles over the years. Some teams have a few others waiting at the site to lend a hand to carry things in. It's usually a walk to get to wherever you're setting up and pop, etcetera, is heavy. All the concession paraphernalia excluding food is in at least one big carryall.

The concession cash box goes out with ORANGE1 or ORANGE 2 and does not get left at the site. It goes home with you or the GYM COORDINATOR and is brought in first thing Saturday morning.

Hot dogs, buns & donuts will be delivered to each site on Saturday morning as early as possible.

Where a kitchen is available, a pot for hotdogs is supplied. If there is no kitchen, a hot plate goes out. For efficiency 3 tables work pretty well, one for selling tickets, which are recycled, and two side by side for serving. Set up a bit away from the gym doors in a wider traffic area if possible. The long extension cords are used to guarantee that the hot plate and coffee percolator or both percolators are not plugged into a circuit on the same breaker. Do not pull the plugs on any piece of rental facility property without the permission of the custodial or facility staff.

The big score sheets get taped with masking tape to the wall along with two bristol boards, one for the price list and one for the 50/50. White pieces of copy paper are used where necessary to put on directional arrows indicating where the gym, washrooms and concession are located. Copies of the ALIGNMENT SHEET & SCHEDULES & MASTER CONTACT LIST are also posted.

The balls, duct tape and a copy of goal assembly instructions are in a second carryall. This is returned to the concession area to hold ice and act as a cooler on Saturday.

Divisional teams U-12 and up use leather futsal balls. The younger players use the fuzzies or felt ones. There is a third carryall sent out just to hold extra balls if there are both younger and older players sharing the same facility.

For the goals, two per playing surface of course, it takes one person, let's say an hour, to carry in, assemble and attach the nets. I've done it myself in as little as a 1/2 hour. The balls are always packaged out with the goals but must be put with the scorebooks and horns in the concession area overnight. The one possible advantage to setting up is of course free gym rental for at least an hour's practice. That's only a factor for the keeners but it has been done. No team balls are allowed on site at any time whatsoever. Gym use does not apply at DELBROOK where a mandatory INDOOR REFEREE CLINIC is held each year before the tournament. After a classroom lecture, they will be in there.

Each goal has 4 pieces, two ends and two crossing pieces, one at the top front and one at the lower back. After insertion one and one half wraps of duct tape are used at the 4 joints. The nets are full size outdoor types which are taped in place using one and one half wraps every foot or so. The duct tape is ripped down the middle lengthwise to make it easier to pass through the netting. The excess net is pulled around to the back of the goal and flaked out flat back there.

Most gyms have a couple of benches for the basketball teams to sit on during games. Lay one on its side diagonally in a corner at opposite ends. The teams change players from there.
